What Is Laser Vision Correction?

Laser vision correction, also known as refractive surgery, gently reshapes the cornea—the clear front surface of the eye—to improve how light focuses on the retina. The goal is to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses or contact lenses.

The procedure typically takes only minutes, and most patients return to work and normal activities within a day or two.

Types of Laser Vision Correction

LASIK
LASIK uses a precise laser to reshape the cornea and correct common vision problems, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Most patients experience rapid visual recovery and minimal discomfort.

PRK
PRK uses the same laser technology as LASIK but does not require creating a corneal flap. This procedure may be recommended for patients with thinner corneas or certain lifestyle considerations. Although recovery is longer than LASIK, PRK offers equally safe and effective results.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK or PRK?
You may be a candidate for laser vision correction if you:
-
Are at least 21 years old
-
Are not pregnant
-
Have a stable glasses or contact lens prescription for at least one year
-
Have a prescription between approximately -7.00 and +3.00
-
Have healthy eyes and realistic expectations about your results
A comprehensive evaluation is the best way to determine whether LASIK or PRK is right for you.
